Kol Emeth Room 5-6
Join Cantor Sharon Bernstein and her KE team of Adam Tachner, Ben Lehmann, and Lisa Kolbe, as we reimagine prayer. This ruach-filled service is a chance to experiment and see how prayer can touch the heart and soul.
Cantor Sharon Bernstein grew up in Palo Alto, and her parents, Mel and Aviva, are long-time members of Kol Emeth. She graduated from Palo Alto High School and continued her musical studies at the University of Redlands, where she focused on Voice and Piano. After serving several congregations in California, she enrolled in the H.L. Miller Cantorial School at the Jewish Theological Seminary. She wrote her MA Thesis on “The Italian System for Chanting the Torah According to the Torino Tradition” and served as an instructor in Hazzanut for the JTS Cantorial program in Jerusalem.
Israel and Jerusalem proved extremely inspiring, both in her discovery of the richness of the Jewish musical traditions and in shaping her parallel career as a Yiddish performer. Through the wondrous resources of the Hebrew National University, she has learned melodies from Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Italian, and Hasidic traditions, and loves teaching and singling them. Cantor Bernstein has served Congregation Sha’ar Zahav in San Francisco since 2007.
