Sep. 24 and 25 – The Dybbuk: A Multimedia Chamber Opera

The OFJCC presents the exclusive West Coast premiere; with the performance in both English and Hebrew with supertitles.  On the Sunday performance, join a pre-show lecture and talk with three world experts on the topic of the Dybbuk: Kol Emeth’s Senior Rabbi David Booth; Stanford Professor and renowned Ansky scholar Gabriella Safran; and composer and Colorado University Composition Professor Ofer Ben Amots.

A young woman, near death, awakens to the whisper of a clarinet. She must choose between life with a man she does not know and death with her beloved, who has possessed her as a dybbuk—a deceased soul who takes possession of a living body. The Dybbuk is a multimedia chamber opera composed by Ofer Ben-Amots and inspired by S. Ansky’s timeless Yiddish play.

Folk elements intertwine with contemporary musical textures to create a haunting world, while multiple video projections tell a powerful story of faith, mysticism, and passion.
