“It’s Complicated! A Look at Contemporary Jewish life in Poland”
Play the word association game with Jews and say: “Poland” and most will respond with “Auschwitz.” Yet today’s Poland is more than that. Poland provides a safe environment for a revitalization of Jewish life. There are thriving Jewish institutions and communities. And unlike most other European countries, all these institutions function without any police or military security. Nevertheless, it is a community beset with many challenges and problems. Rabbi Schlesinger will talk about these issues and more.
A native of Los Angeles, Rabbi George Schlesinger is a graduate of Stanford University and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Before moving to Palo Alto in 2011, he spent more than 35 years serving Conservative congregations ranging in size from 200 to 1000 families. Since arriving in Palo Alto, Rabbi Schlesinger has taught numerous classes at Kol Emeth. For the last two years he has served a congregation in Prague, Czech Republic, for the High Holidays, and he recently completed a month-long fellowship in Krakow, Poland working with the Jewish and non-Jewish communities.
